📖 No One Else Can Tell It — A Provenance Statement
“Oh you told me exciting things. These are things that no one else can ever tell me. Remember that. No one else can ever tell me the things you told me.”
— Joyce Hanson, San Bernardino Oral History Project (2003), in conversation with Madeline Switzer
This book carries more than poetry. It carries memory—etched in pencil stars, inked in a sister’s gift, pressed into a bookplate designed by a woman who once wired voices across the air.
First owned by Helene G. Switzer, one of America’s early radio engineers and an Occidental College graduate, then inscribed by her sister Madeline Switzer, a seamstress, public historian, and storyteller whose 2003 oral history interview lives on in the San Bernardino Public Library archive. The recipient, Richard Pierse, may have been a cousin—Helene and Madeline’s mother was born a Pierce—or another thoughtful steward in their extended community.
Later, the book entered the library of Dr. Martin Lockley, the Welsh-American evolutionary scientist and philosopher. His faint pencil star notations ("✶")—visible throughout—mark moments of resonance and reflection.
Together, these hands formed a quiet chain of thinkers, readers, and collectors. Scientists. Storytellers. Women who built memory into the walls of public life.
There is only one like it. Once gone, it cannot be told again.
✨ The Kasîdah of Hâjî Abdû El-Yezdî
Illustrated by Willy Pogány | David McKay Company, 1931
From the Martin Lockley Library | Ex Libris: Helene G. Switzer
Appears to Be Signed by Illustrator (See Photos)
This 1931 edition of The Kasîdah—Sir Richard Burton’s visionary metaphysical poem written in the voice of a fictional Sufi mystic—is a rare blend of literary invention and visual grace. Illustrated in luminous black-and-white by Willy Pogány, the work is Burton’s philosophical response to The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám.
It is not a translation, but a literary artifact of spiritual inquiry—a book of fate, humility, doubt, and eternity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you guarantee this is a first edition?
I conduct extensive research to determine publication details and clearly state when a book appears to be a first edition based on known markers. However, variations can occur, and absolute certainty isn’t always possible without specialized tools or certification. I aim to be transparent when something cannot be verified with confidence.
How do you determine the authenticity of your books?
Each book is carefully evaluated for publication details, materials, condition, and provenance. I also use AI tools to support bibliographic research and analysis. While I strive for accuracy, I am not a certified appraiser or authenticator—my descriptions reflect well-informed but informal observations.
Can I request a specific book or topic?
At this time, I do not take custom requests through Etsy. However, subscribers to the Dispatch may be invited to request personalized curation or sourcing on a limited basis. You can join here:

Do you offer gift wrapping or personalized messages?
Yes! All orders are thoughtfully packaged, and complimentary gift wrapping + handwritten messages are available upon request. Just leave a note at checkout.
What makes your books unique?
Artifex Heirloom specializes in rare, antique, and collectible books with lasting beauty and meaning. Many are first editions, artist-illustrated, or historically significant works. Each one is hand-selected for its literary, artistic, or scholarly value—chosen for those who collect with intention.
Where do you get your books?
Books are carefully sourced from:
âś” Private collections
âś” Estate libraries
âś” Antiquarian book dealers
âś” Library deaccessions
Only a small percentage meet the standards for Artifex listings. The rest are archived, donated, or repurposed.
How should I care for a rare, vintage, or antique book?
To preserve your heirloom:
âś” Avoid direct sunlight
âś” Store in a cool, dry place
âś” Handle with clean hands
✔ Use bookmarks—never fold pages
âś” Keep away from extreme heat or humidity
Each book is unique. Treat it gently, and it will last generations.
What is your background with rare books?
I was raised in a family bookstore and have made a home among books for a lifetime. My background includes research, storykeeping, and preservation—skills shaped by years of academic inquiry and attentive care across disciplines.
Each book I offer is handled with that same reverence.
I don’t just list items—I steward stories, so they can be passed on with meaning and memory intact.
